THE ORPHAN

"Micheal why haven't you arranged those files on my table?Beside that you have not dusted the table itself.Look at those chairs,is that where they supposed to be?"
Micheal stood transfixed in confusion. He had resumed and started work as earlier as 6.15am.and had done most of the office cleaning, even the one complained about by his boss.
- - -
Micheal Miller, from the remote village of Isomu in Ijebu had lost his parents when he was just eight months old in an auto crash and he was hitherto, entrusted into the care of his maternal groundmother, who also died three years later.
For eighteen months after the death of his groundmother,he had to live on the support of good hearted people in the village, because he had no any other living blood relative to take care of him.
But one day a man came from Lagos looking for a house-boy to stay with him.
And when they brought Micheal to him,he liked him and said he would like to take him in.
This was seen as an opportunity for the orphan boy.And within some few hours, arrangements was concluded with some elders, and three days later,Micheal Miller landed in the city of Lagos.
A tartered, wretched and uncivilized village orphan boy.
Micheal coming into the Emena's home, spelt a different word in writing to the agreement reached upon with the elders in the village of Isomu. He was more or less taken and used as a slave.
Mr.Emena himself was not the direct thorn in Micheal's life, but his wife and the three daughters.
They saw him as a beast of burden that need not to be pitied, but pushed around and ladened with workload responsibilities of the house. After all he was nobody and had nobody to ask them any question regarding him.He was their slave for life.
But Micheal Miller endured. He was barely six years old,and growing up the hard way. What can he do.He had no choice, this was what destiny had given to him,he had to accept it.There was only one consolation he had,and that was given the privilage to attend school once in awhile,if they felt to let him.
One day he came back from school tired and hungry, but there was no food kept for him to eat.Without considering this,Mrs.Emena told him to immediately go to the market to buy some food items.

The market was about three miles away.He gave him no transport fare, but gave him thirty minutes to go and come back. And under the heavy sun, hungry and tiredness,he set off.
It took him three hours. He ran, treked and jogged all the way to and back with the heavy food stuffs load on his head.
But he was very far too late behind the time set for him.He was beatn to a polp, and went to bed that day without food.

Micheal managed to finish his primary school at the age of thirteen despite all forms of humilations and deprivations of regular school going, puntuality and participations in school's activities. His G2 result was the best in the state. He was given a scholarship for his high school by the state government. But his custodians deprieved him the opportunity to use it.
They told him to chose school and leave their house or stay to do the house-help work he had come to do.Micheal, had no option, because he had no where to go,and knew nobody. He forgot school and chose his house-help-work.
When Micheal turned fifteen,he could no longer bear the pains of his slavery kind of life.He told the Emenas he wanted to go back to the village. They told him he can go if he had his transport and knew the way back to the village.
Already he had made up his mind and felt that nothing was going to stop him from going away from them.
And three days later,he packed his little belongings in a polynthen bag and left the Emenas home early one morning before they could wake up from their sleep.
Where he was going to,he does not know. All he wanted was to get away and be free.
Micheal roamed the streets of Lagos for several days sleeping in uncompleted buildings and under the bridges without food, not even a shekel to buy a park of candy.
One afternoon he was sitting behinde a stall in one of the markets, tired and worned out when a woman walked up to him and asked him if he could help her carry one of her bags of items to her car across the road.
He looked at the woman, then at the bag, wearily,he shook his head in acceptance, got to his feet and carried the big stuffed bag and followed the woman.
The woman gave him a hundred naira note for his effort. And it was as if he had won a hundred million naira jackpot.
He entered a buka and ordered for rice and beans worth of forty naira, bought two satchets of water for ten naira, collected his fifty naira change, and walked out.He was now fifty naira rich and filled with hope. The hope that if he could work in the market, helping people carry loads he would be making some money.
This was how he became a porter in the market and at nights, sleeps in open-shops.
The Orphan
Three months later, having saved some money,he rented a room not far from the market and also bought a wheelbarrow, then changed trade selling iced satche water.
He spent two years doing the barrowboy business in the market and nearly all the traders in the market knew him.He had struggled to have his life transformed, though not had achieved his desired dream in life, but he was happy and whenever he went to bed he always dreamed of seeing himself sitting on a big chair in a big office giving orders to people, old and young.
One faithful afternoon when the market was in its full brim of the usual market mien,a group of armed robbers struck. The RRQ police waded in and engaged them in a bloody confrontation.
Two of the robbers were killed and three arrested and several other suspects in the market.Micheal was also among those arrested.
He spent eight months in awaiting trial cell. And when the case finally came up,Micheal was found guilty and sentenced to death by firing squard.
The traders in the market took to the street to protest the rulling, calling on the governor to overrule the court judgement.
The state government set up an investigation and at the end he was found clean and then set free.
One day,a year after his freedom,he found an office massanger vacancy in a newspaper ads and he applied. He did not hope in getting the job, because he hadn't got the educational qualification,he thought his primary six certificate was not enough credencial to get any office job in the labour market when people with more valuable certificates were in thousands out there looking for any kind of employment.
But surprisingly a week later he was among the people called for an interviw.
He attended the interview. And among them all he was picked. That was how he got the office messanger job at Dare&Ken Ltd.
The wise thing Micheal did after getting the job was to enroll in an evening school and began studying for the GCE exam. The following year he bought the form and sat for the exams.
And when the results came out it was a horror!Of the six papers he took he did not make a single one.He knew there must had been a mistake somewhere, and he knew the results ascribed to his name wasn't his.He had studied hard and written well enough to obtain better results than the ones given him.He was sad,but not discouraged.
And the following year he re-took the exam, which was his third year at Dare&Ken.He was now twenty-one years old.
"I'm sorry sir".Micheal appologised.
"You better be.Now get out of my sight you imbecile before i change my mind!"Mr.Larry Adeigbe shouted.
Micheal walked hurriedly out of the office.
Larry Adeigbe was a devil he had been trying to make him give up the job that had given him a preview of what getting better education means to life.He was just the only one in the entire company that hated him, others had been encouraging and supportive, and some of them knew about Larry's cold treatment towards Micheal but there was nothing they could do about it.Larry was a senior manager.
And Micheal was unflinching he was ready to bear it all.Bearing ill-treatments had been part of his life.
And when the GCE exams results came out.It was all round excellent grades. The following year he sat for the JAMB exams and scaled through and got admission in UNILAG to study Bus.Admin.
Five years later Micheal graduated with a first class upper. He moved ahead, got a new job as branch manager of Golf Oil Company and was posted to Port Harcurt. He was now twenty-six years old strong and healthy of life.
Two years after,Larry lost his job.
Rita Emena the second daughter of Philip Emena was in Port Harcurt to attend an interview at the Golf Oil Company. It was coming up the next morning and so she had been in the city staying with her elder sister Kerry, now married and living in the city with her husband.

Larry saw an advert for a position in the branch office of Golf Oil Company in Port Harcurt and he applied and was invited for an interview. But when he got to the venue and entered the office, who did he see sitting at the head of the interview panel?
It was unbelievable...But it was believable.Larry colapsed and passed out.He was rushed to the company's inhouse clinic. And when he came around five minutes later he began to beg for forgiveness and sheldding tears.

When Rita stepped in before the interview panel, neither did she knew the ebony youngman sitting kingly at the head of the table nor did the youngman knew her either.
But when she mentiond her family name, the memories came floording back into Micheal's brain. He got to his feet, excused himslf and went out.

When Rita later knew who he was,she was speechless.
***
Larry and Rita both saw the result of destiny. They did not get the job afterall and the stigma of reality tormented them beyond measure.
Four years later Micheal became the regional chairman of the company. He was thirty-one years old with Phd in chemical engineering.
In Port Harcurt,Micheal met and married Sonia and they both had a set of twin girls,Terry and Merry.
